The Facts In The Case Of Dr. Andrew Wakefield
diversion sign
A fifteen page story about the MMR vaccination controversy. As ever, I'm sure a few spelling errors have slipped past me. Feel free to point any out so I can correct them.

The reference links for the strip are in the next blog entry.

Now! Let's have a heated debate!

2013 update. Since I wrote this blog entry, this cartoon strip as well as many others on such subjects as homeopathy, chiropratic, evolution, and the supposed NASA Moon hoax landings, have been published in a book: Science Tales in the UK (Myriad Edtions) and How To Fake A Moon Landing in the US and Canada (Abrams). Here's the link to my main blog.

1 MMR Vaccination Scandal Story

i never bought this bullshit in the first place. jenny mccarthy and jim carrey are idiots.

Is there any way to get this published and put into every doctor's office in the world?

As a mom of 3, a psychologist, former researcher and an admitted child-research junkie, THANK YOU!!!! Of course I was wishing to see here the kiddie birthday party where Wakefield collected blood from his son's friends. Priceless. Your readers might be interested in this other portrayal of the Wakefield Saga - True Blood Botched: A Small Town Retelling of the Dr. Andrew Wakefield Autism Odyssey

I have two autistic children, high-functioning ASD. I can understand why someone might see a connection between a virus that some studies have linked to the disorder and an immunization containing that virus occurring around the time major signs and symptoms of spectrum disorders start cropping up. (PLEASE NOTE, I AM NOT AGREEING WITH THEM -- far from it.)

The fact is, we tend trust our doctors and we trust our scientists. And a lot of coincidence all at the same time is hard to swallow. And just *not* *knowing* how your child ended up with this disorder is very, very hard.

I noted changes, developmental delays, in my sons after their 18-month needles... but the first diagnosis didn't stop me from innoculating my second child, and two diagnoses didn't stop me from innoculating my 2-month-old daughter, who had her first set of needles yesterday.

Some things, like reducing the chance of serious childhood illness, are more important than a slim and probably nil chance that needles cause autism.

And some of us would very much like Jenny McCarthy to shut the fuck up and stop claiming to speak for us, even with all she's done for awareness.

Thank you!

Why would Wakefield say that 3 separate doses were safer than a single dose if he was going to create a single dose vaccine, or did I miss something?

He created a single-dose measles vaccine.

He claimed that the single dose MMR vaccine (which innoculates against the three diseases measles, mumps and rubella) was less safe than giving one vaccine for measles, a separate one for mumps, and a third for rubella.

People believing this claim drives up demand for single-dose measles vaccines of the kind he patented.

Hope that helps :)

This is great! (Not what happened, but how you explained it). :)

I love you more than anything. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

As a qualified immunologist/virologist - THANK you! And can I link to this in my journal? More people need to see this.

For note: I work in a place in London directly opposite where the anti-MMR protestors were the other day. The urge to fling one of our dead database servers out of the window at them was almost overwhelming..

Wakefield and Deer both on the radio tonight (Thurs)

I do a live radio show at www.radioornot.com Mon-Thur from 6-8pm ET. Tonight, Dr. Wakefield will be on live with me at 6pm, and Brian Deer will be on at 6:30.

I hope anyone interested will stop by and listen.

If you miss it live, the podcast will be up on the website later tonight.

BTW, the comic is perfect. Great work!

Many thanks from the mother of a child w/Autism. It used to be a very, very lonely place in the anti Vaccine=Autism camp, and many of the other mothers I know were pushed away from there by fear mongers and those selling services from 'Thoughtful House,' the "clinic" in the US were Dr. Wakefield currently uses our special needs children as guinea pigs. So, can you create a comic that can help shut that down please? :)

Thank you. Mister Andrew Wakefield, as he is now, is no longer working at Thoughtful House. They parted ways around a month ago.

Can't thank you enough for putting it not just so succinctly, but with pictures that underline the utter stupidity as well as highlight-by-contrasting-tone the evil behind this whole debacle.

As the grandparent of a child with Aspergers Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, I am disgusted by the pseudoscience around it.

Wakefield's acts have harmed a lot of kids from the measles they caught. In my opinion they are criminal acts, and he should be deported.

But he is not alone. I see people trying to "cure" autism by diets and other non-medical regimes. This takes energy, time, and money away from the helpful things that can be done. It harms them.

I am thankful that my son and daughter-in-law have resisted the unhelpful things. They have provided my grandson with the help and guidance he needs. He turns 15 this week, is mainstreamed in his school, has a goodly number of friends, and is receiving an award tomorrow recognizing his contributions to the school. Yes, as would be expected, he's "unique". But he is a strong self-advocate and understands how and why he's different from other kids, and values that difference. He does not see Aspergers as a disability and, consequently, others around him don't either. I wish every child with an autism spectrum disorder could get the support he did, and gain increased ability to thrive.
