A fifteen page story about the MMR vaccination controversy. As ever, I'm sure a few spelling errors have slipped past me. Feel free to point any out so I can correct them.

The reference links for the strip are in the next blog entry.

Now! Let's have a heated debate!

2013 update. Since I wrote this blog entry, this cartoon strip as well as many others on such subjects as homeopathy, chiropratic, evolution, and the supposed NASA Moon hoax landings, have been published in a book: Science Tales in the UK (Myriad Edtions) and How To Fake A Moon Landing in the US and Canada (Abrams). Here's the link to my main blog.

I am Darryl Cunningham and this is my main blog.

Anyone retarded enough to listen to a former Playboy playmate (renown for their 'intelligence' and being up to date on the latest medical papers) when it comes to anything apart from how to look good naked doesn't deserve to look after their own children or make any medical decisions for themselves let alone anyone else!

But Tallguy-whether you are pro or anti vaccine this isn't the truth. Did you read his study? The conclusion was... MORE research needs to be done!
You can not convince people to trust "science" when something as simple as this is twisted. So you have a parent that reads all the sorts of articles like this then they get their hands on the actual study. Seems like "science" is full of a bunch of fools who can't read a study or are they deliberately lying??? You see the problem. There is a serious need for LESS propaganda BS and more honesty. The US is the only country giving vaccines like Hep B to new born infants but parents are villainized for even questioning it. I'd like to see more science in science and less BS and fear mongering.

The US is by far not the only country and is actually in the majority of countries who give HepB at birth and a whole lot of countries also give BCG at the same time. There is nothing wrong with questioning why they need it ever. What is wrong is to question it in this way. HepB is a sexually transmitted disease and from IV drug use and tattoos, why would my newborn baby ever come into contact with these things? While it is true that those activities increase your risk for contracting a HepB infection, that is obviously not the only way to get it since most HepB infections that become chronic were contracted before the age of 5. Children under the age of 5 have a difficult time clearing liver infections. Liver infections that cannot be cleared become chronic and can lead to liver cancer. We (countries who approved it) to 31/5-4 year old children. This did decrease the incidence of HepB infections in children, but not by near enough so they progressively started giving them at early ages and the incidence went down considerably. That is good science.

I can also understand where you are getting a lot of scary information from both sides, but if look closely only one side has any evidence and it is not just from science, it is from history and anthropology. It is dangerous not to get your children vaccinated. Listen to what Benjamin Franklin had to say about a the really dangerous practice of inoculating for
smallpox (taking pus from an infected person and stabbing someone with it repeatedly). " “In 1736 I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the small-pox, taken in the common way,” he wrote. “I long regretted bitterly, and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation.

“This I mention for the sake of parents who omit that operation, on the supposition that they should never forgive themselves if a child died under it, my example showing that the regret may be the same either way and that, therefore, the safer should be chosen.”

Brilliant! Thank you for this post. There's a minor typo at the bottom right of section 13: "lackies" should be spelled "lackeys."
I really appreciate you laying out the whole story so neatly and succinctly: I learned a lot of details I didn't know before.

Thank you for sharing! I work with children with ASD and other developmental disorders and this type of science conspiracy preys on desperate and frightened parents. They want so much to find a cause because that could mean finding a cure. This true story of Wakefield needs more coverage than it currently has. Thank you, again, for posting.

One possible edit - those of us who work with individuals with disabilities like to use "people first language." For example, we'd say "children with Autism" as opposed to "Autistic children." The same as you'd say, "women with breast cancer" instead of "cancerous women." Thereby acknowledging their dignity as individuals rather than summing them up by their disease, condition, or disability. Obviously you meant no offense and so I'm just suggesting this possible edit.

So well written. So to the point. An amazing conflict of interest.

Wow, I am really shocked by all of this burning at the stake of non-vaccinating or delayed vaccinating parents by educated people! Those who are still holding on to that "vaccines = autism" in the non-vaccinating camp are the same as the FLDS are to the Mormon church... outliers who claim to be part of the "church" but are really doing their own thing.
The reason to delay MMR at the very least until 2yrs old is because the blood brain barrier in children is not fully formed until 2 yrs old. MMR is recommended at 12 mths (as my pediatrician just informed me at my daughter's 1yr appt this week). The blood brain barrier is exactly what the name implies, the ability for blood pathogens to enter brain matter via the circulatory system without a filter prior to the age of two. So, autism aside, all the items in the vaccines (the live viruses, the solution in which they are kept [and no, I am not talking about mercury, the educated among us know that isn't the issue that it used to be] are traveling into your child's brain... I don't know about you all but knowing that the biggest period of brain growth is from 0-3yrs old and from that point on your brain "prunes" synaptic connections based on use until you die, I don't feel like throwing in some random junk that my children don't need into their brains. 2yrs and a day... fine, shoot 'em up... but the reason why "all vaccines" are recommended in these massive quantities by 18mths is not because children NEED them by then, it's because that is the age up to which federal funding for vaccines for children is paid for. Had the funding specified 15mth or 24mths the APA (American Pediatric Assoc) and the CDC would recommend 15mths or 24mths for them all. These ages and combos are not based on scientific research as to BEST practices they are based on "what is the schedule that is least likely to produce harmful interactions within the federally funded window." I'm sorry but I don't appreciate the federal government or my insurance company telling me when I should shoot chemicals into my child's developing brain based on a law passed by Congress... sorry, no can do. So, what do I do? All the "kill you before age 1" diseases I vaccinate for... easy peasy... but one live and one inert vaccine per visit. Do you know there are SIXTEEN separate vaccines recommended for the 3mth and 6mth visits? Seriously people? And people act like their children running fevers, being cranky, sick out of sorts for a few days after vaccines is unavoidable... uh, no, not at all... Get a vaccine now (or two), come back in 4 wks, get another one or two... yes, it requires more visits but heck, if you didn't want to put a little extra effort into parenting why did you embark on this journey in the first place? Convenience and parenting are a tad oxymoronic in the same sentence together.

Okay, so say you do vaccinate on time... you stick your baby in daycare all vaccinated up, say that you are "building their immune system" and "socializing your two year old" by putting them with a babysitter all day when what you are really doing is making them unduly sick, reducing the amount of brain stimulating interaction they are receiving in this crucial period and last but not least, rationalizing your parenting choices for sticking your kids in an environment that, despite all these "socialization" claims, research clearly supports that children parallel play and are not capable of true, empathetic social interaction until about age five... which, gasp, is why kindergarten starts at age 5!! Shut the front door!! What a coincidence, right? So, if you don't want your child in a non-stimulating petri dish, and you want to delay vaccinations you need to make personal, financial, and parenting choices to keep your kids from being exposed to not only the non-vaccinated germs (Measles, mumps and rubella which, for the first two I DEFINITELY agree can be deadly and life altering to contract... my daughter contracted rubella on an airline flight (never let the stewardess hold your baby, lesson learned!) when she was 6mths... 6mths before she would have been vaccinated for it even on the CDC/APA standard vax schedule) but as with all viruses, to the super-bugs that are developed by a blanket inoculation program that has not adapted to a changing society.
All this being said, non-vaccination is a luxury of the middle class and beyond because, as a low income American, you can neither afford the time off work for the many doctors visits, the additional cost of the shots or co-pays associated with spacing out vaccinations, or the childcare choices that protect unvaccinated/delayed vaccination children until they are vaccinated/beyond the age of death by infection/etc. This, in my opinion, is the true travesty of all of this because, by virtue of some granite countertops and a weekly trip to Target we are somehow more worthy of controlling our children's health and safety than those who by virtue of their financial standing are forced to adhere to government mandated vaccination standards?

Sorry for all the separate posts, it keeps flagging them as too long :/

Oh, and one more thing, the majority of the "required" vaccines in the U.S. prior to 18mths whole or in part are to prevent strains of meningitis, which can be a deadly disease at any age. However, the majority of meningitis cases are meningococcal meningitis (I would have to look up the figures but as I recall it was around 80% of cases) which has no vaccine. So, for the 20% or less of cases of meningitis caused by other strains I am going to give my 1yr or less infant TWELVE different vaccines to prevent these relatively rare strains of meningitis? Beyond that, my baby is either at home with a solo caregiver or worn on my body when I leave the house... when exactly would she contract these rare strains in the first place? It's just not logical to blindly follow government mandates of any sort without actually evaluating what they are asking of you and weighing whether you believe that is reasonable or not. A great, current and relatively unbiased book on the topic that I highly recommend is "The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for your Child" by Dr. Robert Sears. He outlines each vaccine, its contents, its benefits, its drawbacks and even teases out the differences between different vaccine manufactures for that particular vaccine to allow you to make the best choice not only for or against a vaccine but to ask for Merck vs Phizer based on the contents/side effects/effectiveness/etc. He debunks common vaccine myths and, as the title implies, is truly advocating for informed decision making regarding vaccines as opposed to for or against universal child vaccination. All parenting decisions should be made by parents based on the good of their child and the parent's research based on the best information available at that time... assuming non-vaccinating parents haven't thought about what they are doing or are uniformed is as ignorant as me believing all vaccinating parents do not care about the brain health and development of their children... right?

just keep sending all my post to spam and i will know who the fakes really are

02 April, 2014 New Published Study Verifies Andrew Wakefield’s Research on Autism – Again
Two landmark events – a government concession in the US Vaccine Court, and a groundbreaking scientific paper – confirm that physician, scientist, and Autism Media Channel [AMC] Director, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, and the parents were right all along.

In a recently published December 13, 2012 vaccine US court ruling, hundreds of thousands of dollars were awarded to Ryan Mojabi, [i] whose parents described how “MMR vaccinations,” caused a “severe and debilitating injury to his brain, diagnosed as Autism Spectrum Disorder (‘ASD’).”

today, scientists and physicians from Wake Forest University, New York, and Venezuela, reported findings that not only confirm the presence of intestinal disease in children with autism and intestinal symptoms, but also indicate that this disease may be novel. [viii] Using sophisticated laboratory methods Dr. Steve Walker and his colleagues endorsed Wakefield’s original findings by showing molecular changes in the children’s intestinal tissues that were highly distinctive and clearly abnormal

Mercury is very dangerous. But it is somehow safe in a vaccine. It has not been removed as we have been told. They just call it another name. I will agree that he probably just wanted to sell the new vaccine however since this is supposed to be about fact checking...try some on the opposition as welll.

good grief - vaccinate yourself with toxic poisons but let the rest of us make our choice. Fluoride, msg and vaccines have destroyed your rational decision-making ability

so many lies in this - google That Paper Wakefield

Just saw this...it's great! Thank you!

q about 3 vs 1 jabs?

Hi Darryl, on p3 in the middle two drawings, you mention that Doc Wakefield pushed a 3 jab vaccine as safer over the 1 jab version, but later on, you say he had taken out a patent on a single vaccine? If the patent thing is true, then wouldn't he be more likely to sell us the single jab idea? Did you mean it the other way around?

(also, the beginning of the word cloud in drawing 5 same page, "this suggestion was not supported by the paper", maybe should directly go to block 4, "would be safer than a single vaccination, which was not supported by the paper". just an idea?)

Terrif job!

Re: q about 3 vs 1 jabs?

I can't figure out why this throws so many people. I'm not blaming you at ALL, please believe me, because I've seen a NUMBER of previous commenters with the same confusion. I just don't quite see where people get lost. Anyway, the information in the comic is accurate as presented. I'll walk through the relevant bits:

  1. [p3] Doctor Wakefield's press conference called into question the safety of the COMBINED single-jab M-M-R (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine. He stated that it would be safer to vaccinate children in three separate doses — one for each virus. (That's, perhaps, the bit that the comic isn't quite explicit enough about.) So, the claimed-"safer" protocol consists of three jabs: Measles shot, Mumps shot, Rubella shot. Instead of one MMR shot.

  2. [p8] Wakefield had filed a patent for a single Measles vaccine: A one-jab vaccination for Measles only, which could be part of a three-shot, separate-vaccinations protocol, like the one he claimed (above) was "safer" than single-shot combined MMR.

  3. [p9] "This new vaccine only stood a chance if confidence in MMR was damaged" Dr. Wakefield's newly-patented, single-shot Measles vaccine would only be useful if a 3-jab, separate-vaccines protocol were to replace the single-shot, COMBINED MMR protocol. The same one that his original press conference had cast unfounded doubt on.

Hopefully that clears up the confusion.
