I worked this out for myself whilst trying to understand what was going on for my partner when she was acting a little strangely - it helped me a lot.

People with schizophrenia typically act completely rationally - considering the distorted/filtered inputs. I realised that if the guy on the radio was calling me a whore, and tinfoil would stop it, then I too would wrap the radio in tinfoil - it's a rational response to a distorted input. Thinking of schizophrenia as a set of distorting sensory filters leading to typically rational responses helped me lose the fear of it, and once you lose the fear, it's easier to meet schizophrenic people for the people they are
